Background Information: Neuropilin-1 isoform 2 (identifier: O14786-2) is also known as soluble NRP1 or SNRP1. The sequence of this isoform differs from the canonical sequence by 3 amino acids (aa 642-644, EFP → GIK). NRP1 is a membrane-bound receptor for both vascular endothelial growth factor and semaphorin family members. NRP1 has been implicated in vascularization and progression of cancers. A positive correlation has been shown between elevated NRP1 expression and tumor samples of the brain, prostate, breast, colon and lung. Soluble NRP1 is expressed differently than the intact NRP1 and is also a VEGF165 antagonist. Recently studies have shown that NRP1 binds to the S1 domain of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein via its b1 domain (aa 273-427). This may facilitate the entry of SARS-CoV-2 virus into the cells thereby making it a potential target for future antiviral drugs.
